Medusa

• n. メドゥーサ（古代ギリシャ神話に登場する3人の蛇の髪のヒロインの一人）。

古代ギリシャ神話に登場するゴルゴニアンのセイレーン、牙を持ち頭髪に毒蛇の塊を持つ3人の恐ろしいセイレーン、メドゥーサ（medousa）を語源とし、後にスウェーデンの生物学者リンネが、毒蛇の触手に似たクラゲを指す言葉として借用した。ギリシャ語のmedein（守る、見守る）に由来し、語源はPIE*med（計る、考慮する、手段を講じる）で、語源的にはmeasure（計る）、meditate（瞑想する）と同じである。

medusa (n.)

Her name is from Greek Medousa, literally "guardian," fem. present participle of the verb medein "to protect, rule over" (see Medea).
