1947年にインドとパキスタンが分割され、インドから分離独立したイスラム教国で、パンジャブ、アフガニスタン、カシミールの3つの国名の合成語。語源はPunjab、Afghanistan、Kashmirの頭文字から。 -stan、state、語源的にはstand、stateと同じ。
