Old English ?ftan "from behind, behind, farthest back," from superlative of Old English ?f, af, of "away, away from, off" (see of). The Germanic superlative suffix *-ta corresponds to PIE *-to (compare Greek protos "first," superlative of pro "before"). Now purely nautical.
