farmer

本来の意味は、家賃徴収人、徴税人。土地の所有権は持たず、土地を耕作する権利や次の耕作者に再貸与する権利のみを持ち、次の耕作者から土地の賃料を徴収して地主、すなわち封建領主や地主に渡す。後に農民を指すfarmの影響を受けた言葉である。
