PIE*keg、歯、フック、語源はフック、ハックと同じ。 麻の櫛、ジュートを梳くための櫛を指すのに使われる。ジュートは荒いので、力を入れて梳く必要があり、そのため語源は単純で荒い、懲らしめる、反対尋問する、という意味になった。

heckle (v.)

early 14c., "to comb (flax or hemp) with a heckle;" from heckle (n.) or from related Middle Dutch hekelen. Figurative meaning "to question severely in a bid to uncover weakness" is from late 18c.
