ラテン語のgesta「行為」、gerere「持ってくる」からの英雄譚、語源はbelligerent「消化する」と同じ。 元々は、通常誇張された色彩で英雄譚を語ることを指し、最終的に冗談、冗談、娯楽に語源が派生した。

jest (n.)

Sense descended through "idle tale" (late 15c.) to "mocking speech, raillery" (1540s) to "joke" (1550s).
