おそらくラテン語のiynx、首の曲がった鳥が語源だろう。鳥の首は180度回転し、蛇のようなシビラ音を立てる。これは古代、呪術で占いや呪文を唱えるのに使われ、ひいては不吉、ジンクスにも使われた。
