leaのスペル変化から。イギリスのアマチュア考古学者アルフレッド?ワトキンスが1921年に考案した言葉で、彼がイギリスの古代文化遺跡を調査中に、それらがほぼ一本の線で結ばれていることを偶然発見し、レイラインという仮説を立てた。 この発見はその後、世界中の考古学者から大きな関心を集めた。しかしその後、この仮説は計量経済学に似ており、十分なデータがあれば仮説は簡単に構築できるが、精査には耐えられないことが多いことが明らかになった。
