古フランス語のparler（話す）から、ラテン語のparabolare（話す、会話する）から、para-, beside, around, -bol, to throw, to hurlから、語源的にはparable, ballisticと同じ。文字通り、横に投げること、ひいては比較すること、巧みに話すこと、会話すること、後に和平交渉、対話を指す言葉として使われる。
