スペイン語のpecado（罪）、guilt（罪悪感）、-illo（接尾辞）、ラテン語のpeccare（誤り、過ち、違反）から、おそらくpedica（足）、anklet（足首）から、語源はfoot（足）と同じ、biped（二足歩行）、impeach（弾劾）。

"slight sin," 1590s (earlier in corrupt form peccadilian, 1520s), from Spanish pecadillo, diminutive of pecado "a sin," from Latin peccatum "a sin, fault, error," noun use of neuter past participle of peccare "to miss, mistake, make a mistake, do amiss; transgress, offend, be licentious, sin," perhaps literally "to stumble," from PIE *ped-ko-, suffixed form of root *ped- (1) "foot" (see foot (n.)).
