ラテン語のpeonia、芍薬、牡丹、ギリシャ語のPaian、古代ギリシャ神話の癒しの神、語源はpaeanと同じ。 ゼウス神が死後、牡丹の花に姿を変えたという伝説や、牡丹は癒しの効果があることからその名がついたと言われている。

a 16c. merger of Middle English pyony (from Old English peonie) and Old North French pione (Modern French pivoine), both from Late Latin peonia, from Latin p?onia, from Greek paionia (fem. of paionios), perhaps from Paion, physician of the gods (or Apollo in this aspect), and so called for the plant's healing qualities. The root, flowers, and seeds formerly were used in medicine.
