ギリシャ語のphyle（部族、種族）、PIE*bheue（成長、存在）の語源で、語源的にはbe（物理的）と同じ。 後世の生物学者は、生物の分類を表すギリシャ語をドアを指す言葉として借用した。

The immediate source of the English word probably is from German.
