ギリシア語のプロクルステスに由来する。プロクルステスは、金を奪う他の盗賊とは異なり、通行人を一定の長さのベッドに縛り付け、ベッドの長さを超える者の余分な手足を切断し、ベッドの長さよりも短い者の手足を無理やり伸ばした伝説の強盗であり、それゆえこの言葉の意味が派生した。その名前は、ギリシャ語のprokrouein（打つ、叩く、伸ばす）に由来し、pro-は前へ、kroueinは打つ、叩くからきている。
