toad-eater, toad-eaterから略された。中世、チャラ男が若い下僕にヒキガエルを食べさせ、毒を盛られたふりをし、チャラ男の治療薬を飲ませるとよくなるという、伝家の宝刀を披露する習慣から。この言葉の意味は後に派生した。

"servile parasite," 1826, apparently shortened from toad-eater "fawning flatterer" (1742), originally (1620s) "the assistant of a charlatan," who ate a toad (believed to be poisonous) to enable his master to display his skill in expelling the poison.
