"stakes interlaced with twigs and forming the framework of the wall of a building," Old English watol "hurdle," in plural "twigs, thatching, tiles," related to weeel "bandage," from Proto-Germanic *wadlaz, from PIE *au- (3) "to weave" (see weeds).
